Before the snafu that made Academy Awards history, viewers tuned in and the Internet alike were focused on Nicole Kidman. Memes of the actress’s bizarre clapping went viral before the curtain had even closed on the Oscars, and now Keith Urban’s wife is talking.
“It was really awkward,” Nicole says of her seal-like applause. “I was like, ‘I wanna clap, I don’t wanna not be clapping’—that’d be worse, right? Like ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?’ So therefore, I’m clapping, but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not mine—but it was absolutely gorgeous—and I was terrified of damaging it.”

Nicole goes on to explain the feeling in the room when the now-infamous Best Picture announcement went down, saying she thought someone needed medical attention. “I wasn’t sure what was going on,” she adds. “No one in the audience was. Then there was some shuffling, envelopes—and people rushing onstage ... I was like ‘What is going on?’” Nicole attended the Oscars as a Best Supporting Actress nominee for her role in Lion.
