FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) — ALDI, a German-based grocery chain, is planning to build a store in Fairhope as a part of a long term marketing strategy.
According to The Shopping Center Group, who is involved in the development, ALDI paid $1.25 million for 7 acres of land at the northeast corner of State Road 181 and Fairhope Avenue. The property is across from Walmart.
According to the ALDI website, the chain was founded by the Albrecht family and opened in 1961 in Germany, making ALDI the first discounter in the world.
Headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, ALDI now has more than 1,600 stores across 35 states, employs over 25,000 people and has been steadily growing since opening its first US store in Iowa in 1976.
Over the past decade, ALDI has nearly doubled in size. By the end of 2018, ALDI will bring its total number of US stores to nearly 2,000.
The ALDI website said the chain works with farmers and offers a wide variety of fresh, in-season produce, including organic fruits and vegetables. According to the website, ALDI has USDA Choice meats as well as gluten-free and organic foods and is "committed to bringing our shoppers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices."
