A low down dirty dog

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WPMI) — A local animal shelter warns thieves are nabbing dogs right out of people's yards.

It's happening in the Bay Minette area. The North Baldwin Animal Shelter says it has received eight reports of stolen dogs in the last three weeks.

"I thought people need to be aware. They need to keep their pets safe," said Beverly Poiroux with the North Baldwin Animal Shelter.

Poiroux is warning people to lock their gates and be on the look out.

James White says his German Shepherd mix Milo was stolen earlier this month. He showed us pictures of what he says are marks Milo left behind as he was dragged out of the yard.

"Someone had taken the dog off the runner he was on," said White. "Whoever stole the dog had to have some tools to get him loose."

Poiroux says the thieves are targeting larger breeds, and she fears dog fighters are the culprits.

"It’s a very real problem. People taking these to use as bait dogs," said Poiroux. "People have told us this is going on, that they know their neighbors are involved but they’re afraid to say anything for fear of repercussion."

Between the Bay Minette Police Department and the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, only one police report has been filed. The shelter says this crime often goes unreported.
