So What's Happening Mardi Gras Day in Downtown Mobile?

There won't be any official Mardi Gras events or parades, but unlike New Orleans, bars will be open and there will be an area for revelers. Keep in mind, statewide masking and social distancing requirements will still be in place.

The following is a statement from the Mobile County Health Department regarding the operation of permitted bars and food establishments in Downtown Mobile leading up to Mardi Gras 2021:

"Temporary event permits are being waived for permitted bars and food establishments within the legally defined City of Mobile Entertainment Districts, on their premises and areas approved by the City of Mobile. Inspectors will be out throughout the weekend as well as Fat Tuesday to ensure Health codes are being followed and outdoor bars comply with existing health regulations. The Governor’s Safer at Home Order remains in effect. Masking and social distancing will be required, and frequent hand sanitation is encouraged to all who attend"

From the Downtown Mobile Alliance:

Mardi Gras 2021

Given how enthusiastically Mobilians have embraced the Porch Parade effort, we are expecting some number of revelers to come downtown to celebrate in our bars and restaurants on Fat Tuesday. To provide as much outside space as possible for potential crowds, the City will be closing the streets as seen in the map. While there are no official activities planned, a display of floats is planned for Mardi Gras Park, along with the giant Mardi Gras Tree and Bellingrath Gardens lighted display.

A couple of things to note:

  • The statewide masking and social distancing requirements will still be in place, and those coming downtown to celebrate will be expected to comply.
  • There will be no parking on Dauphin Street Tuesday, the 16th. Signs will be posted, but please be aware that all cars should be off the street before 5:00 a.m.

Officers will be stationed at intersections to allow delivery trucks, residents and those working downtown access to the businesses inside the zone.
