Trade Those Beads for Free Doughnuts at Krispy Kreme!

BEADS FOR DOUGHNUTS:

This Monday and Tuesday, March 18 and 19, it will finally be time to turn your Mardi Gras beads into lovely Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts.

For 12 pounds of Mardi Gras beads (basically, a standard Target bag almost completely filled), you will get a coupon for a dozen glazed. Just bring your beads to the Krispy Kreme store at the southeast corner of Airport and Hillcrest between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. each of those two days (or the Foley KK location).

Here’s a hint: Monday morning tends to be the best time to come. Tuesday evening tends to be the worst. This, of course, is about so much more than us being able to stuff our faces with doughnuts.

The beads are collected for a program at the Augusta Evans School for special-needs students. There, the students inspect, sort, wash, and repackage the beads to sell to parading organizations, who throw them all over again. It recycles beads, teaches the students about working a job, and raises important funds for the school.

Last year, according to Augusta Evans principal Asha Kidd, the program raised a record $100,000 for the school. Please make sure that the beads you turn in are not broken because broken ones are simply trash that the kids have to throw away. Also make sure that your bags contain beads ONLY. No Moon Pies or footballs or bricks. Just beads.
