Man Jumps Into Mobile Bay from the Bayway To Save His Dog

I think there's a new phrase after what happened in Mobile over the weekend: "Dog's Best Friend." The dog's name is River, the best friend is the owner! His name is Al Trovinger. He and his family (and River) were stuck in that landlocked traffic in the east bound lanes of the I-10 Bayway after a car accident caused everything to stop down for a long while. (I was actually heading East bound on the Causeway when I saw the traffic as I came out of Bankhead...and I knew it was bad when cars were going slowly down the ramp BACKWARD.)

Anyway, the Trovinger family had been on the Bayway for about 30 minutes and decided they needed to get out of the car and let the dog walk around. They put her on a leash, and she jumped over into the water!

When River jumped, her collar snapped in half. Trovinger watched from above for about 10 minutes before taking the plunge too.

He said, "We kept on looking at her could tell she was getting a little desperate finally there was nothing else we could do she was either going to drown or someone was going jump off and get her so I jumped off."

Someone threw in a dog vest to try and help. It didn't fit River, but did help her float a little, so they made it to a boat launch across from the Battleship.

He said he would do it again to save his dog. And all dog owners that I have talked to about this said they would have done the same!

Here's to a great story with a happy ending! :) Shelby
