GOOD NEWS: STUDENTS INVENT WHEELCHAIR-STROLLER TO HELP NEW FATHER

Three years ago, 37-year-old Jeremy King had surgery that led to him being unsteady on his feet. Since then, in order to get around safely, Jeremy has been using a wheelchair.

Life changed again for Jeremy when he learned that he was going to be a father. But, there were concerns. Jeremy was worried he would not be able to take the baby on walks.

That’s when his wife, Chelsie -- who happens to be a high school teacher -- stepped up. Chelsie reached out to fellow teacher Matt Zigler and asked if he could have his product development class create a wheelchair-stroller.

The 10 students in Matt’s “Making for Social Good” class designed and perfected a product that allows a person in a wheelchair to walk their child in a stroller. They actually came up with two versions -- one for newborns and small children, and another for older children.

The timing was perfect. Just a few weeks after Chelsie and Jeremy’s son, Phoenix, was born, Jeremy was able to safely take him out for walks, just as the couple had dreamed even before the baby was born.
