Crews begin rescuing thousands in Escambia County from Hurricane Sally

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said Wednesday morning that crews are rescuing thousands of people in the county affected by Hurricane Sally.

Sheriff Morgan says the hardest hit areas are the west side of the county and the Perdido Key area. Thousands of people need assisted and rescued from their homes and other places due to heavy flooding.

Sheriff Morgan says the sheriff's office has started these rescues Wednesday morning with boats and highwater vehicles. He added that the county is receiving assets from the state -- National Guard, etc. -- to come and assist with these efforts.

Sheriff Morgan said one family so far has needed rescued from a tree.

Sheriff Morgan compares the damage thus from Hurricane Sally similar to the devestating Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Portions of Pensacola Beach are underwater, as well as much of downtown Pensacola, according to Sheriff Morgan.
